France 2026: one step closer to the future of European trade

When businesses discuss mandatory e-invoicing, the conversation often focuses on compliance deadlines.

But France's upcoming mandate is about something bigger.

It's part of a wider transformation that will fundamentally change how businesses exchange invoices across Europe.

By July 2030, the EU aims to make structured electronic invoicing the standard for cross-border B2B trade. Traditional PDF and paper invoices will no longer be sufficient for these transactions. Instead, businesses will be expected to exchange invoice data in structured formats that can be processed automatically.

France is one of the next major milestones on that journey.

From September 2026, large enterprises will be required to issue electronic invoices, while all VAT-registered businesses must be capable of receiving them. SMEs will follow in 2027.

For many organisations, this may seem like a local French compliance project.

In reality, it's part of a much broader European shift towards digital trade infrastructure.

The move aims to improve tax transparency, reduce fraud, and create more efficient invoice processing. But it also encourages businesses to move away from manual invoice handling and towards automated data exchange between systems.

For businesses trading with France, preparation should already be underway.

Key areas to review include:

  • ERP readiness
  • Electronic invoice capabilities
  • Customer and supplier onboarding
  • Data quality and validation
  • Integration and automation opportunities

The organisations that begin preparing now will not only be ready for France's mandate; they will also be better prepared for a future where structured electronic invoicing becomes a prerequisite for doing business across borders.

France isn't the final destination.

It's one of the clearest signs of where Europe is heading.
