Australia has no general B2B e-invoicing mandate, but Peppol is the national framework for structured e-invoicing and is widely supported across government and the private sector.

Australia has established a national e-invoicing framework based on the Peppol network. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) acts as the Australian Peppol Authority and oversees the framework for exchanging structured electronic invoices.

There is currently no general mandate requiring Australian businesses to use e-invoicing for domestic B2B transactions. Adoption in the private sector remains voluntary, while the Australian Government has introduced e-invoicing requirements for Commonwealth entities.

E-invoicing is currently voluntary for general B2B transactions in Australia. Businesses can choose to send and receive structured electronic invoices through the Peppol network when their trading partners are also enabled.

In the public sector, all non-corporate Commonwealth entities have been required to be capable of receiving Peppol eInvoices since 1 July 2022. Other Australian Government entities as well as state, territory, and local governments have also adopted e-invoicing, although requirements and adoption can vary.

Businesses that choose to use e-invoicing in Australia exchange structured invoice data directly between their accounting or ERP systems through the Peppol network.

Businesses don't need to become accredited Peppol service providers simply to send or receive e-invoices. They can connect through an appropriate service provider or e-invoicing-enabled software solution. Peppol service providers operating under the Australian framework are subject to accreditation requirements overseen by the Australian Peppol Authority.

Australia uses the Peppol eDelivery network as its national framework for e-invoicing. Australia and New Zealand operate an aligned e-invoicing framework, with specifications designed to support interoperability across both markets.

The current framework supports PINT A-NZ, the Australia and New Zealand implementation of the Peppol International Invoice model. Structured invoice data is exchanged through Peppol service providers, enabling invoices to move directly between the sender's and recipient's business systems.
