Suppliers to the Swiss federal administration are generally required to submit electronic invoices for contracts exceeding CHF 5,000. 

Switzerland has established e-invoicing requirements for certain transactions with the federal administration, while electronic invoicing remains voluntary for most B2B transactions.

Since 1 January 2016, suppliers with contracts exceeding CHF 5,000 with the Swiss federal administration have generally been required to submit invoices electronically. There is currently no general mandatory B2B e-invoicing or clearance regime.

For transactions between private businesses, there is currently no general structured e-invoicing mandate. Businesses can therefore use electronic invoicing voluntarily based on their own requirements and agreements with trading partners.

Invoices submitted to the Swiss federal administration must comply with the applicable federal invoicing requirements and contain the information needed to identify and process the invoice correctly.

Suppliers should follow the electronic invoicing instructions provided by the relevant federal authority and use an accepted electronic delivery method.

Switzerland supports electronic invoicing through established e-billing service providers and agreed electronic channels. The federal administration supports electronic invoice submission through connected service providers.

Peppol can also be used for electronic document exchange where supported by the parties involved, but it is not the sole national infrastructure for e-invoicing in Switzerland.
