Why Slovakia's Digital Postman model is one of Europe's most interesting e-invoicing projects
Across Europe, governments are introducing mandatory e-invoicing in different ways.
Slovakia has chosen one of the most innovative approaches.
The Digital Postman
From January 2027, Slovakia plans to introduce mandatory electronic invoicing using a model often referred to as the "Digital Postman." Voluntary testing is already underway, giving businesses an opportunity to prepare before the mandate takes effect.
Peppol as the fulcrum
At the centre of the initiative is the Peppol network, an international framework that enables businesses and public authorities to exchange electronic documents in a standardised way.
Under the Digital Postman concept, invoices will be routed through a government-managed delivery infrastructure before reaching the recipient. This provides tax authorities with greater visibility while maintaining a standardised exchange process for businesses.
The transition
For organisations already using Peppol, the transition may be relatively straightforward.
For others, the mandate highlights the growing importance of adopting internationally recognised standards for business document exchange.
Slovakia's approach is attracting attention because it combines two important trends:
- Government oversight of invoice data
- Standardised international exchange through Peppol
Many experts view this as a potential model for future e-invoicing frameworks elsewhere in Europe.
Are you already trading with Slovak customers?
Businesses that trade with Slovak customers or suppliers should already be evaluating:
- Peppol connectivity
- ERP integration requirements
- Invoice format readiness
- Cross-border document processes
While January 2027 may seem distant, successful e-invoicing projects require planning, testing, and coordination across multiple systems and business partners.
Slovakia's Digital Postman initiative offers a glimpse of where European trade is heading. As the EU moves towards structured electronic invoicing for cross-border B2B transactions by 2030, standardised networks such as Peppol are likely to play an increasingly important role in how businesses exchange documents. For many organisations, preparing for Slovakia's requirements is also preparation for the future of European commerce.
